SiteGround Hosting Review

SiteGround nicely balances price with customer needs, and the result is a really fantastic product. With shared, cloud, dedicated, and reseller hosting available, they’ve got something for everyone.

Prices starting at $3.95/Month

Shared hosting plans

Like other hosting sites, SiteGround offers a couple of shared hosting solutions depending on what you need. Something nice that they do is break their plans down by how many visitors you can expect to handle with that plan.

StartUp: $9.95 full price (10,000 monthly visitors)

The SiteGround StartUp Plan is one of the most inclusive entry plans there is. Full price it’s $9.95 per month for 12 months, but at the time of writing it was on sale for $3.95 per month for 12 months. So what do you get?

  • 1 domain registration
  • 10GB website space (disk drives)
  • Unlimited broadband
  • Unlimited MySQL databases
  • Daily backups
  • CloudFlare CDN
  • Enhanced cPanel control with integrated Softaculous access
  • Unlimited email (POP3 and IMAP)
  • Choice of datacentre (Chicago, Amsterdam, or Singapore)

GrowBig: $14.95 full price (25,000 monthly visitors)

The GrowBig plan goes for $14.95 per month for 12 months, but at the time of writing was on sale for 50% off, bringing the price to $7.45 per month for 12 months.

In addition to everything above, the GrowBig plan gets you:

  • Priority technical support
  • SuperCacher (for improved speed, especially for WordPress)
  • SSL certificate (1 year)
  • 30 backup copies
  • 20GB web space (disk drives)
  • Unlimited add-on domains

GoGeek: $29.95 full price (100,000 monthly visitors)

The GoGeek Plan retails for $29.95 per month for 12 months but at the time of writing had the same 50% off sale as the rest of the shared hosting, bringing it down to $14.95 per month for 12 months. The GoGeek plan includes:

  • 30GB website space on SSD
  • PCI compliance
  • Preinstalled Git

In addition to these advantages, each GoGeek server is loaded with fewer accounts, which means each one gets more resources (and thus more speed).

Cloud and dedicated servers

SiteGround have both cloud (VPS) and dedicated server solutions for those who feel that a shared server’s resources are simply not going to cut it.

Cloud hosting (VPS)

SiteGround’s cloud hosting solutions start at $54.00 per month if you get a 6 month plan, with the price increasing up to $60.00 per month if you pay month to month. That gets you one 3.0 Ghz core with 2GB RAM, 20GB disk space on SSDs, and 5TB bandwidth. Each plan also comes with VIP support, full server management, backups, CDN, and datacentre distribution. They also come with most of the features of the shared hosting plans, plus a private domain and an SSL certificate thrown in for free.

Their prices increase steadily and caps at $126.00 per month for 6 months ($140 if you pay month to month). That gets you quad 3.0 Ghz cores, 4GB RAM, 80GB disk space on SSDs, and 5TB bandwidth.

Of course, being cloud tech, you can always create your own plan and tinker and tweak for the perfect solution, getting up to 16 cores, 16GB RAM, and 100GB storage for $396.00 per month for 6 months.

Dedicated hosting

SiteGround’s dedicated servers start at $229.00 per month (plus $99.00 setup fee) for their Entry server plan, with gets you dual Intel i3-540 3.06 Ghz CPU cores, 4MB cache, 4GB RAM, and 500GB SATA II HDD storage, plus 5TB bandwidth. Their dedicated plans come with a couple of optimization plans for WordPress, Joomla, or Magento, depending on your needs, plus the general managed dedicated server products like MySQL and PostgreSQL, WHM and cPanel access, Apache and CentOS already installed, SSH, CloudFlare, and other expected services.

Their top plan, the Enterprise Server Plan, goes for $429.00 per month  (plus $99.00 setup fee) and gets you the Intel Xeon E5-2620 CPU (2 Ghz clock speed) hexa-core setup with a 15MB cache, 16GB RAM, and 4x500GB SATA II / RAID-10 HDD storage, plus 5TB bandwidth.

Reseller hosting

Finally, SiteGround offers reseller hosting as well, but they run it in a slightly different way. Each reseller buys ‘credits’ and each credit is a year of hosting, so you can resell one account per credit. You have to buy 5 to join the program and they go for $49 per, so minimum investment of $245 for 5 accounts to resell. Each reseller account comes with all the basics like SQL databases, 10GB web space, unlimited data transfers, and nice speed things like SuperCacher and CDN, and a pile of redundancies.

All of the SiteGround plans come with cPanel and SSH access, both of which can be used to deploy Perl scripts to your hearts content. Perl comes preinstalled on all of their servers.

SiteGround uses 5.10.1, which is more than up to date enough to use the vast majority of the CPAN script repository.

Finally, more than almost any other hosting company we reviewed, SiteGround has by far the most robust Perl support. From knowledgeable support staff through to an amazingly robust knowledgebase, you’ll find a lot of your answers right on their site.

Technical details

  • SSH and enhanced cPanel (Softaculous is integrated into it)
  • WHM access
  • LAMP host with CentOS
  • Perl 5.10.1
  • MySQL and PostgreSQL databases available with phpMyAdmin and phpPgAdmin
  • Python and multiple versions of PHP
  • Pre-installed Git

For a balance of product, price, and customer service, SiteGround is hard to beat. They have good custom built servers which they work to speed up for everyone (not just their premium plans), they offer fantastic long-lasting discounts (not just per month), and their knowledgebase is exceptionally robust. If you want something really precise, you might have to look elsewhere, but for 99.99% of individuals or businesses looking for a hosting partner, then SiteGround will suit you to a T.
